Step into the spiritual heart of Anatolia with an unforgettable evening at the Whirling Dervishes Ceremony, held in the beautifully restored Saruhan Caravanserai, just 15 km from Göreme. This mystical performance offers a deep cultural and spiritual experience, rooted in the teachings of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi (1207–1273)—the great Sufi mystic and poet.
The Sema ceremony symbolizes a dervish’s spiritual journey toward perfection. As they whirl in graceful unison, the dervishes represent the soul’s ascent through love, reaching truth, and returning to serve all creation without discrimination. Every gesture has meaning—from the removal of their black cloaks (symbolizing rebirth) to the positioning of their hands, connecting the heavens and the earth. It is both a ritual of devotion and an artistic expression of divine unity.
The ceremony is performed in Saruhan Caravanserai, a stunning 13th-century Seljuk inn once used by merchants on the Silk Road. Built in 1249, this historic stone structure features towering walls, Seljuk-style carvings, and an atmospheric courtyard. Watching the ceremony here adds depth to the experience, as the spiritual past and architectural heritage come together in one setting.
The evening begins with hotel pickup from any town in Cappadocia, including Göreme, Urgup, and Avanos. You’ll arrive early enough to explore the interior of the caravanserai before the ceremony starts at 18:30. The performance lasts approximately 45 minutes and concludes with the serving of Şerbet, a traditional Ottoman drink offered as part of the ritual.
Whether you're drawn by cultural curiosity or spiritual interest, this tour offers a meaningful connection to the soul of Türkiye.
